We’re onto Week 8 in college football and Week 7 in the NFL. While there’s plenty of season left to unfold, ESPN’s Field Yates has taken an early look at the 2027 NFL Draft.
Yates has unveiled his initial mock draft, though it’s not a full one. He projected the top ten picks, based on standings if the season ended today.

Three quarterbacks are selected in the top ten, and there could be double that amount that are taken in the full first round when it’s all said and done. Things have certainly been shaken up from when the season started, at least outside of the No. 1 overall pick.
Six of Yates’ top ten picks are from the offensive side of the ball. Three quarterbacks, two wide receivers, and one tackle. The remaining four are on defense, with two EDGEs and two cornerbacks.

The Chargers have been the NFL’s biggest disappointment so far this season, and they’re still seeking their first win. Their passing offense has struggled tremendously, and Yates has Los Angeles taking the top wide receiver on the board in Jeremiah Smith.
Coming into this year, Smith had 163 receptions for 2,558 yards and 19 total touchdowns in two seasons at Ohio State. This year, he already had 52 catches for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns through seven games. He’d provide an instant, elite boost for Justin Herbert .
Quite a few people have moved Drew Mestemaker up to QB1 in the 2027 NFL Draft. He is currently completing 67% of his pass attempts for 1.940 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions, adding 142 yards and two scores on the ground in his first season at Oklahoma State.
Previously, Mestemaker spent two seasons at North Texas. In 2025, he completed 68.9% of his passes for 4,379 yards with 34 touchdowns, nine interceptions and five rushing scores. He’d be an instant glimpse of hope for a Dolphins offense that needs a long-term answer at quarterback.
In six games in 2026, Leonard Moore has allowed just six receptions on 153 snaps in coverage. He’s viewed as the clear-cut top cornerback in this draft class at this point in the cycle.
While he doesn’t have an interception this season, Moore had five last year and has seven in his three-year career at Notre Dame. He also has 92 career tackles and 23 passes defended, and earned All-American honors in 2025.
Colin Simmons suffered a high-ankle sprain this past weekend, but that won’t hurt his draft stock at all. He’s still arguably the top defensive player in the class, and could be taken even higher than No. 4 as he is here.
In just six games in 2026, he has 25 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. In three years with the Longhorns, Simmons has 116 tackles, 45.5 tackles for loss, 31.5 sacks, one interception and eight forced fumbles.
Dylan Stewart has only played in three games this season due to injury and then a suspension, but his talent is tough to look away from. In those three games in 2026, he has six tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and two forced fumbles.
Entering the year, Stewart was viewed as a potential top five pick. His trouble with the Gamecocks earlier this year hasn’t changed that. Across the 2024 and 2025 seasons at South Carolina, he totaled 56 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and six forced fumbles. He’d be an instant infusion of youth to a struggling Commanders defense.
Charlie Becker has firmly established himself as a top receiver in college football. On the season, he has 39 receptions for 694 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s coming off of his season-best day, bringing in nine catches for 165 yards in a loss against Ohio State.
This season is Becker’s second at Indiana, as he was part of last year’s national championship winning squad. In 2025, he had 34 catches for 679 yards and four touchdowns.
The 2027 NFL Draft is wide open in terms of the quarterback pecking order. Enter CJ Carr. The Notre Dame leader is completing 66.8% of his passes this year for 1,639 yards, 16 touchdowns and one interception with three touchdowns rushing.
Last year, his first as the starter for the Irish, he completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,741 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, also with three rushing scores. He’d be an intriguing pick for the Jets, who need an answer beyond Geno Smith , with Cade Klubnik as the next man up as things currently stand.
Yates noted that Trevor Goosby and LSU ‘s Jordan Seaton are at the top of the class for offensive tackles, but he gave the edge to Goosby here for the Texans.
Goosby is a standout run blocker, and Yates also pointed to his power up front as a fit to the Texans. He’s the second Texas player off the board, picked to protect C.J. Stroud .
While Trinidad Chambliss will be 25 when the 2027 NFL season gets underway, his talent is going to have him picked very early in April. He’s the third quarterback off the board for Yates, coming in at No. 9 to the Cardinals, who picked Carson Beck in the third round last year.
Last year, Chambliss threw for 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions with 527 rushing yards eight rushing scores. He also played well through Ole Miss’ run in the College Football Playoff. This year, he’s completing 67.6% of his passes for 1,676 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions, adding six touchdowns on the grouond.
Another high-upside cornerback, Ashton Hampton has solidified himself as one of college football’s best. He’s off the board to round out the top 10 in Yates’ 2027 NFL mock draft, and for good reason.
On the season, he has 19 tackles, two tackles for loss, nine passes defended and an interception. He has 91 tackles, four interceptions, 23 passes defended and a sack in his three-year Clemson career.
